'For Tom and Dan, fellow mountaineers'
This is the dedication for Black Mountain. It refers back to a winter trek up the mountain with my two sons when they were only little. It started well enough, but after reaching the summit, things started to go wrong.
After taking a short-cut on the way down, I became lost in deep snow. My youngest was shivering badly and had to be hoisted onto my shoulders and given our shared supply of sweets. As I trudged on, I could only hope not to fall over the 300m precipice hidden in the mist at the edge of the escarpment.
After much nervousness and a few hasty prayers, we eventually made it all the way back down. And yes, that is relief you can see on the boys' faces!
